Nestled in the lush forests of central India, Kanha Tiger Reserve is one of the country’s most celebrated wildlife destinations. If you’ve ever imagined watching a Bengal tiger emerge from a misty meadow or spotting the rare hard-ground barasingha grazing peacefully in golden grasslands, Kanha is where those dreams come alive.
Made famous by its breathtaking landscapes and remarkable biodiversity, Kanha offers far more than tiger sightings. It is a destination where nature, conservation, and unforgettable safari experiences come together.
A Brief History of Kanha National Park
Kanha’s conservation story began in 1955, when it was declared a National Park. In 1973, it became one of India’s first tiger reserves under the Government of India’s Project Tiger initiative. Today, the reserve covers over 2,000 square kilometers, including both core and buffer forests, making it one of India’s largest protected landscapes.
Kanha is also internationally recognized for saving the hard ground barasingha (swamp deer) from extinction. Thanks to decades of conservation efforts, this magnificent species now thrives almost exclusively in Kanha, making the park a global success story in wildlife protection.
Along with tigers, visitors may encounter leopards, Indian wild dogs (dholes), sloth bears, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer, barking deer, over 300 bird species, and countless smaller creatures that make every safari unique.
Kanha Entry Gates Explained
Kanha Tiger Reserve has three primary entry gates for the core safari zones. Your choice of accommodation should ideally be based on the gate through which your safari begins, as early morning reporting times make long drives inconvenient.
1. Khatia Gate (Most Popular Entry Gate)
Location: Mandla District, Madhya Pradesh
Best for: Guests arriving from Jabalpur (160 km) or Nagpur (260 km).
Khatia is the busiest and most versatile entrance to Kanha. It provides access to Kanha Zone, Kisli Zone, Mukki Zone (for full-vehicle bookings), Sarhi Zone, and the Khatia Buffer Zone. The majority of resorts, restaurants, and tourism facilities are located around this gate, making it the preferred choice for first-time international visitors.
2. Mukki Gate
Location: Balaghat District, Madhya Pradesh
Best for: Guests arriving from Nagpur (260 km) or Raipur (250 km).
Mukki Gate is widely regarded as one of the best entry points for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers due to its reputation for excellent tiger sightings. It serves as the main entrance to Mukki Core Zone, while full-vehicle safaris can also access Kanha and Kisli Zones depending on permit allocation. The nearby forests are rich in bamboo, grasslands, and water bodies, attracting a wide variety of wildlife. Buffer safaris for Khapa and Phen also operate from this side.
3. Sarhi Gate
Location: Northern side of Kanha Tiger Reserve, near Bichhiya.
Best for: Travelers seeking quieter safari experiences.
Sarhi Gate provides access to Sarhi Zone, along with Kanha and Kisli Zones for eligible full-vehicle safaris. This entrance is less crowded than Khatia and Mukki, making it popular with birdwatchers and visitors looking for a peaceful wilderness experience. Resort options are more limited compared to the other two gates.
Distance Between Kanha Entry Gates
- Khatia Gate → Mukki Gate – 45–50 km – 1–1.5 hours
- Khatia Gate → Sarhi Gate – 55–60 km – 1.5 hours
- Mukki Gate → Sarhi Gate – 90–100 km – 2–2.5 hours
Because morning safaris start before sunrise, staying close to your designated entry gate can save valuable travel time and allow you to enter the park fresh and relaxed.

Best Time to Visit Kanha
Kanha remains open from October to June, while the core zones generally remain closed during the monsoon season from July to September.
- October to February: Pleasant temperatures, lush greenery, beautiful landscapes, and excellent birdwatching.
- March to May: Warmer weather but considered the best period for tiger sightings as animals frequently visit water sources.
- June: Hot afternoons but surprisingly rewarding for wildlife photography before the park closes for the monsoon.
Weather Throughout the Year
- Winter (November-February): 2°C to 20°C. Early morning safaris can be extremely cold, so warm clothing is essential.
- Summer (March-June): 22°C to 42°C. Lightweight clothing, hats, sunscreen, and plenty of water are recommended.
- Monsoon (July-September): Heavy rainfall keeps most core safari areas closed while the forest regenerates.
